  16. <p>     "What's in my name to you? It will wither out, like a sad
  17. sound." That line from Pushkin might describe how some members
  18. of the legislature of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
  19. feel about...well, about the name Union of Soviet Socialist
  20. Republics. The Supreme Soviet is debating whether the country
  21. ought to get a new name once the proposed treaty of
  22. confederation among the 15 constituent republics of the U.S.S.R.
  23. is approved. Three suggestions: Union of Sovereign Socialist
  24. States (U.S.S.S.), put forth by none other than Mikhail
  25. Gorbachev; Union of Euro-Asian Republics, a coinage of the late
  26. Andrei Sakharov; and Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics, a
  27. nomination from the floor. That, of course, would retain both
  28. the word Soviet and the initials U.S.S.R. (or, in the Russian
  29. language and Cyrillic alphabet, C.C.C.P.). If none of them are
  30. judged suitable, there is always the Union of Squabbling
  31. Socialist Republics...
